Ank van Engelen is stoer. Ze houdt van het geluid van de smidse, van de oliegeur van net geleverd staal, van het gekrijs van de slijpmachine, van de hitte van het lasapparaat. Haar vrouwelijke kant zit vooral in haar liefde voor literatuur en poëzie, zegt ze, maar tegelijkertijd heeft ze het over ‘boetseren in staal’ en dat ze heus wel weet dat dat niet kan, maar dat ze het toch altijd weer probeert. Ze houdt ook van die tegenstelling, waar ze ook weer moeite mee heeft: het verhalende van de taal, tegenover het zoeken naar de kern in de beeldhouwkunst. En daarbij gaat het om de onontkoombare noodzaak, voor zichzelf.

Als een van haar favorieten noemt ze Elizabeth Bishop en haar gedicht ‘Filling Station’ dat ik natuurlijk niet kende, maar thuis onmiddellijk heb opgezocht en hieronder afdruk. Je hoopt tenslotte dat je kunstenares Ank hierdoor iets beter leert begrijpen.
Intussen spreken we over haar project voor ‘Leiden’, haar fascinatie voor het ‘als mens altijd onderweg zijn’, het thema reizen en de ontwerptekening met alle metaforen, die hierboven staat afgedrukt.

avengelen 1Daaronder ligt het stalen, geboetseerde hart en daaronder een proefopstelling van de installatie, waarvan ze (natuurlijk) nog niet zeker weet hoe die er precies uit komt te zien. Ik ben wel benieuwd naar deze installatie, die eruit ziet als een samenraapsel van gevonden koffers met in het hart, letterlijk, een hart dat bloed en zweet heeft gekost om te maken. Een metalen hart op een blanke, houten tafel, met daarachter een stoel, alles tussen verweerde leren koffers. We zijn  nog wel even onderweg met Ank.

Filling Station

  Oh, but it is dirty!
--this little filling station,
oil-soaked, oil-permeated
to a disturbing, over-all
black translucency.
Be careful with that match!

Father wears a dirty,
oil-soaked monkey suit
that cuts him under the arms,
and several quick and saucy
and greasy sons assist him
(it's a family filling station),
all quite thoroughly dirty.

Do they live in the station?
It has a cement porch
behind the pumps, and on it
a set of crushed and grease-
impregnated wickerwork;
on the wicker sofa
a dirty dog, quite comfy.

Some comic books provide
the only note of color--
of certain color. They lie
upon a big dim doily
draping a taboret
(part of the set), beside
a big hirsute begonia.

Why the extraneous plant?
Why the taboret?
Why, oh why, the doily?
(Embroidered in daisy stitch
with marguerites, I think,
and heavy with gray crochet.)

Somebody embroidered the doily.
Somebody waters the plant,
or oils it, maybe. Somebody
arranges the rows of cans
so that they softly say:
ESSO--SO--SO--SO

to high-strung automobiles.
Somebody loves us all.
